Marathi beach, Chania

In order to get here you will have to drive 17 km from the city of Chania to the southeastern tip of the Akrotiri peninsula. Marathi has beautifully clear waters and two sandy beaches separated by a picturesque little port. Both of these coves have umbrellas and sun beds which are usually full during the whole summer. Along the coast you will find many cafés and restaurants where you may taste exceptional local dishes.

Marathi is very popular to locals, while the calm and shallow waters make this an ideal destination for families with children. Also, this is one of the few beaches of northern Crete that faces the south, so that you can have a perfect afternoon tan without having to turn your back towards the sea. For the most daring, there is a small rocky islet 600 meters off the coast and you may either swim there or visit by renting a sea bicycle or kayak from beach

Though they are not seen from Marathi, there are two more small islands at a short distance from there, called Souda and Leon. The isle of Souda hosts a well preserved fortress that was built from the Venetians in the 16th century so that they could control the entry of Souda port. Souda Island has a long history and it is certainly worth a visit. The islands are within a NATO military zone, thus they are open to public only every Tuesday and Thursday by boats that go back and forth from the port of Souda.
