Beaches in Crete

Soft sand, warm waters and stunning views make for idyllic beach holidays. Here are our top Crete beaches:

  • Vai Beach: Surrounded by the largest palm forest in Europe, Vai Beach is home to a blend of sand and pebbles framed by clear waters. Facilities are available during summer, and the area is perfect for snorkelling.
  • Balos Beach: With a vivid blue lagoon, exotic scenery and a Venetian castle perched on the island opposite, this beach near Kissamos is a must-visit for holidays to Crete.
  • Agia Pelagia Beach: The main sandy beach is touristy, with tavernas lining the beachfront and various amenities, including dive schools. For a quieter beach experience, seek out the nearby coves.
  • Falassarna Beach: This beach is fantastic for windsurfing, and you’ll find other water sports facilities here too. You can also wander around the ruins of a centuries-old harbour.
  • Malia Beach: The energy of Crete’s party hotspot extends to its lively beaches. Expect crowds, sunbeds and lots of water sports, including banana boats, jet skis and water-skiing.

Peaceful beaches in Crete

Leave the bustling towns behind and escape to one of these calmer, unspoiled beaches across the island.

  • Frangokastello Beach: A short drive from the usual tourist traps, Frangokastello Beach enchants with its Venetian fortress and uncrowded, fine golden sands.
  • Aspes Beach: Be at one with nature at this unique beach located in the Asterousia Mountain Range. You won’t find amenities here, but settle down on the fine pebbles, breathe in the sea air and enjoy the peace and quiet.
  • Tavronitis Beach: Just half an hour from busy Chania town, discover a moment of calm at this pretty, pebbly beach with a backdrop of mountains.
  • Agiofarago Beach: A walk through a deep gorge will lead you to a cove nestled between sheer cliffs. With rock arches and caves to explore, spending an entire day at this remote beach is easy.
  • Katos Zakros Bay: This traditional fishing village is perched on a wide, protected bay and a peaceful pebble beach. Relax in a local taverna with ocean views and fresh seafood.
